POSTPONED Walkability, Housing & PlaceMaking in Oxnard and Ventura County

April 18 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

|Recurring Event (See all)

An event every month that begins at 7:00pm on day Third of the month, repeating until April 18, 2018

We explore what it takes to make great downtowns and how to apply the principles we learn to downtown Oxnard, Ventura and other VC cities. Walkability, housing and placemaking issues are central to the discussion and we will explore case studies and contemporary literature to learn what works and how we can apply what we learn to our local towns and communities.

We will start with introductions and perhaps a YouTube or two. Then launch into thoughtful conversation about what we viewed and how it applies to downtown Oxnard (of course this means any city in VC).

You should join if you care about making downtown Oxnard, and the downtowns of Ventura County cities more successful. Oxnard and the other VC cities are at a crossroads – what can we do to make the transition to more walkable places where housing abounds?

Art and architecture are also central to successful cities. What can we learn to create great local public art and murals?

How can we build better VC cities by tapping into our cultural assets and resources?

What do you think will improve Oxnard and other VC cities? Come and share your vision and experience with other like-minded people who care about and think about walkable cities, housing options and a just plain more successful Oxnard and VC cities.

If you are still with us ~ “Thank You”, and now a short list of reading material:
The Smart Growth Manual by Duany, Speck, and Lydon – you can find a less expensive copy at Alibris.com
The Charter of the New Urbanism: http://www.OxnardRenaissance.org/cnu-charter

Please walk Oxnard from about 2nd Street to Wolley Road and back again on the other side of the street. Make notes about what you experience and how this makes you feel.

Welcome to all those interested in the quality of the walking and placemaking experience in our communities.

We will introduce ourselves and explore our perceptions about walkability, housing, and placemaking in Oxnard and VC.

Bring your goodwill, interest, curiosity, and experience.

We will view one or two YouTube videos and discuss. Probably break for a brief snack – please bring something small to share with the other participants.

We will continue in conversation on Oxnard walkability and placemaking issues.

Please read the following article about important issues for placemaking and housing in Oxnard: www.kronbergwall.com/so-youre-running-for-office/

While not required – we suggest reading the Smart Growth Manual. Get a used copy here: [ https://www.alibris.com/The-Smart-Growth-Manual-Andres-Duany/book/11655758 ].
